What is PBiS?
PBiS (or PBS) is a major advance in school-wide discipline. By providing proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors, positive school environments are created. Instead of using a patchwork of individual behavioral management plans, PBS emphasizes a continuum of positive behavior support for all students and is implemented in areas including the classroom and nonclassroom settings (such as hallways, restrooms).
Positive behavior support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children and youth by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.
NPBiS is the Nebraska implementation of the PBS approach. Thus far, results in Nebraska test schools have been very encouraging. Please review the documents below for more details.
Expectations of NPBiS Schools
PBS in an approach that works. Schools experience increased time for instruction, more positive student behaviors, and less violent and aggressive behaviors. But this program can only work if the school adopts the system and is dedicated to its implementation. NPBiS schools are expected to:
- Implement PBS with fidelity
- Appoint a leadership team and meet monthly to review
- Engage the entire school staff in creating and implementing solutions for behavior
- Complete all program documentation (listed in the PBiS Expectations document below)
- Regularly attend PBS related professional development opportunities
